How to get to the center of Istanbul from Sabiha airport. How to get from Ataturk Airport to Sabiha Gokcen Distance between Sabiha and Ataturk airports

updated 02/26/2019

Merhaba, arkadaşlar!

I don’t know why, but I’m always a little nervous about an independent transfer from the airport to the city. That is why I always study this issue very carefully.

Today’s post will primarily be of interest to those who are going to Istanbul in the near future, but in any case there will be no dry presentation of material. I got to the hotel with a little adventure, which I’ll tell you about.

Important! In addition to the main transfer option, it is always better to keep a couple more in reserve. You never know what kind of force majeure awaits you. Of course, the easiest way is to order a taxi, but this is the most expensive of all the standard methods, although it is also the most comfortable.

After I, happy, with tickets in hand, went online to figure out the transfer, my enthusiasm dropped to zero. Well, judge for yourself, I’m reading a cheerful report from another traveler: “first you take such and such a bus, get to such and such a stop, transfer to the ferry, then from the ferry station you go to the tram stop and ride the tram to the station you need.” What?!
My plane arrives in Istanbul at 19.00, plus half an hour/hour for various airport hassles and money exchange. It's 20.00. It's getting dark at night. A girl with a suitcase, alone in an unfamiliar city, some ferries, trams. Fuck! The evening ceases to be languid.

Istanbul's districts are scattered on both sides of the Bosphorus. The most interesting, from a tourist point of view, is the Sultanahmet area. Here is the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkai Palace, Basilica Cistern and much more.

The map shows that Sabiha Airport (green circle) is much further from Sultanahmet (yellow) than Ataturk Airport (blue). But don’t be too upset, because Ataturk is closed for passenger traffic from March 1, 2019.

I somehow immediately decided for myself that, despite the difficulties with the transfer, I would not exchange Sultanahmet for any other district of Istanbul.

Passport control at Sabiha Gokcen airport was completed quite quickly. Russians do not need a visa to Turkey. They slapped a stamp on my passport and let me go in peace.
While I was waiting for my luggage, I decided to exchange some money. The rate is quite acceptable, but in the Grand Bazaar area it is still better).
The photo was taken in early March; today the lira exchange rate is much more pleasant - 12.28 rubles. And in general, due to the fall of the national currency, travel to Turkey has become very budget-friendly.

Transfer options from Sabiha Airport:

1. Taxi

The most convenient, fastest, but quite expensive way to transfer to the hotel. I was not interested in the cost of a taxi at Sabiha airport. Taxi drivers are on duty at the gate exit, but we know that their prices are always inflated))

The international KiwiTaxi service quotes prices starting from 2,700 rubles (depending on the exchange rate). Provided that there are 3-4 travelers and taking into account the distance of the trip, it is quite possible to order a taxi.

A child seat will cost 300 rubles. Additional services are indicated when booking. The driver will meet you at the airport with a sign, so you won’t have to run around looking for a car.

You can also look for private transfers on Getyourguide, but I didn’t find anything cheap there from Sabiha Airport. Maybe in the season they will come to their senses))

2. Minibus or shuttle

Cost about 15 euros. It is better to order the shuttle in advance; it runs once an hour. See point 1. Sometimes a taxi is cheaper or comparable to the cost of the shuttle.

If you want to think through everything while still at home, I recommend using the services of the international transfer company intui.travel. A trip from Sabiha Airport to the Sultanahmet area will cost 1,279 rubles. Don't forget to indicate the current date, number of passengers and pieces of luggage. If desired, you can request the cost of transfer to the hotel.

3. Adventure trip: bus + ferry/metro

My route ideally should have looked like this: I take a bus from the airport to the pier Kadikoy, there I load onto the ferry, make a romantic night crossing to the pier Eminonu, I walk to the hotel, check in and breathe out.

What was the reality?

From Sabiha Airport you can get to the city by Havatas buses or regular city express trains. The difference is in price and speed of movement. On the official website of the airport, Havatas is called a shuttle.

Both have a stop located directly opposite the airport building. I saw the Khavatash bus right away and rushed to it as if it were family. There are signs on the buses indicating the end point of the route. Watch carefully, Havatash can take you to the square Taksim. From there you can also get to Sultanahmet, but why do you need such an adventure? Look for the sign Kadikoy.

Another plus is that Havatash buses have a luggage compartment. The fare costs 10 liras to Kadikoy and 15 liras to Taksim, you can pay directly on the bus. The first part of the quest has been completed. I relaxed a little, started looking around and found city routes right behind my bus. E10 And E11, which will also easily take you to the Kadikoy pier, but for 4 liras.

View schedule public buses Can . Here it’s up to you to decide - cheaper, but longer, or more expensive, but faster.

The journey from the airport to the Kadikoy pier took approximately 40 minutes. The bus drove up almost to the pier.
During the journey, I managed to meet a girl and a guy from Voronezh, who came to Istanbul for 2 weeks (!). By a remarkable coincidence, they also needed to go to Sultanahmet. The guys, like me, came to Istanbul for the first time, so we decided to stick together. Russians don't give up!

We found the required pier quite quickly, but it turned out that the nearest ferry would only be there in half an hour.

To be honest, I was looking forward to the ferry ride and was ready to wait. However, the only man in our newly formed company suggested getting to the Sultanahmet area by metro. The young man knew for sure that there was a metro line under the strait. I didn’t prepare for trips on the Istanbul metro in advance, but based on some vague impressions from the reports I read, I remembered that the metro lines in Istanbul do not intersect. That is, you can’t, like in Moscow, pay once for travel and ride all day. Each separate branch is a separate payment.

This is where I had to give up traveling together... Well…. the man said. We quickly figured out the token machine (a machine that sells tokens) in the metro. We navigated the map, waited for the train, arrived at the desired station and... oops. Indeed, you can’t just move from branch to branch. Please pay another 5 liras. In Istanbul, travel on any type of transport costs 5 liras if you do not have an Istanbul card.

I decided to refrain from saying “I told you so!”)). In any case, we got to the desired point on the route, only a little more expensive and crooked. At the metro station Sirkesi we parted, wished each other have a great trip and went in different directions.

I’m right next to the Eminonu pier, so as not to change to the tram, but the guys preferred to live in the center of the historical part of Sultanahmet.
Conclusion: bus + ferry is the most optimal route.

What is the best way to get from Sultanahmet to Sabiha Airport?

It’s strange, but almost all guides to Istanbul advised booking a transfer to return to the airport.

Of course, nothing prevents you from repeating the route exactly the opposite, but in fact, it is really easier to order a transfer. The service is offered by almost all travel agencies and hotels. Please note the departure time. Istanbul has a serious problem with traffic jams, so it is better to allow plenty of time for the road. I didn’t bother with ferries and buses and simply booked a transfer at one of the travel agencies. Cost 30 liras or 10 euros.

A minibus will pick you up directly from your hotel. Be prepared for the fact that the transfer is a group transfer and you will be stopping at other hotels for tourists. Travel time is 1-1.5 hours.

This concludes my “technical” post :). Next time I promise to tell you about Istanbul itself, and not beat around the bush.

Despite all the hassles of getting myself to the hotel, I still managed to get a little feel for the city. Eyes snatched unusual faces and clothes from the crowd, Turkish speech was heard everywhere, ferries plied along the strait, and there was a smell of roasted chestnuts. These were my first associations with Istanbul.

Oksana was with you.

The capital of Turkey is served by two airports located in different parts of the city.

  1. Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport is named after one of Atatürk's eight adopted children, Turkey's first female military fighter pilot. Code IATA airport S.A.W.
  2. New Istanbul Airport. International code IATA - IST.

Before leaving the airport, withdraw cash in lira from an ATM at the airport or exchange your currency for local currency. IN public transport They do not accept dollars/euros.

Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport is located in the Asian part of the city, far from the center. Therefore, a trip by any type of transport will take quite a long time.

Shuttle bass

The easiest, most convenient and inexpensive way to get from Istanbul airport is Havabus shuttles. We recommend this method.

You will immediately find them when leaving the building, on the second line. Large white buses with the word Havabus on the side.

Havabus timetable- every half hour from 04:00 to 01:00. This is a formal schedule; in fact, Khavabas leave as soon as the bus is full. And then another one comes up. They walk almost one after another. But if you arrive at night between 1 am and 4 am, you will have to sit and wait.

How to get to Taksim

You need to take a bus towards Taksim. Buses follow to Taksim Square, where they are sent from and to reverse side. Bus parking near Gezi Park metro station.

The cost of the trip is 18 Turkish lira (including luggage). Travel time is about 1 hour depending on road traffic.

Istanbulkarts do not work in Havabus. Payment only in cash on the bus. After everyone is seated and takes their seats, the conductor will come in and ticket everyone.

How to get to Sultanahmet

If there are several options.

1. As written above - get to Taksim by Havabus, and then walk to Taksim Square (about 300 meters), use funicular F1 Taksim-Kabataş, change to tram T1 Kabataş-Bağcılar and get to the Sultanahmet stop. Or you can take a taxi from Taksim to the hotel, we recommend using Uber. A taxi will cost about 17 liras.

2. At the airport take Havabus in direction Kadıköy. The cost of the trip will be 18 liras. Travel time is about 1 hour. At the Kadıköy stop, go to the Şehir Hatları ferry stop. You need a ferry in the direction of Eminönü. The trip will cost 2.15 liras and take 15 minutes. Great views guaranteed.

Look in advance, perhaps the hotel is located next to Eminönü and you can reach it on foot. If it is closer to Sultanahmet, take a taxi or the T1 Kabataş/Eminönü-Bağcılar tram towards Bağçılar. Sultanahmet is only 2 stops away.

Taxi

In Istanbul there are both regular taxis, you can easily find them at the airport, and Uber. The cost of an Uber ride is known in advance; you can view it through the app.

Print or write in advance the address, hotel name and telephone number.

  • We recommend: register in advance so that upon arrival at the airport you will immediately have internet and do not have to spend money on roaming.

Taxi drivers in Istanbul are naturally scammers, and most likely they will drive you in circles, winding up the meter and explaining this by avoiding traffic jams, road repairs, etc. You can install Maps.Me and monitor how the driver is driving you, at least to try to be outraged if he gives you a tour of the city. Although this is unlikely to help, since he will not speak English. Therefore, if you decide to take a taxi, then Uber is better.

A taxi ride from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to a hotel in the Taksim area should cost about 107 liras, in the Sultanahmet area 123 liras.

Private transfer

If you prefer a taxi, it is better to order private transfer . The transfer will also be especially convenient for those who come with family and suitcases.

You will be met with a sign right at the airport in the arrivals area, no need to go looking for a taxi or bus. The driver will help with your luggage. Will deliver directly to your hotel door or to any address in Istanbul. It is safer than a taxi - the transfer company and the driver are known in advance.

The cost of a transfer from the airport is fixed and does not depend on the time of day, traffic jams and other problems. Moreover, you can immediately pay for the transfer online when ordering and then you will avoid paying for the trip with the driver.

Transfer orders must be made in advance, at least 12 hours in advance. We recommend that you immediately book a return transfer.

Where to order a transfer from Istanbul airport:

Our cozy editorial team has tried dozens of different online services for ordering a transfer and recommends it. This is the only company that has 24/7 support in Russian, not only by phone, but also in chat. A very large selection of cars - from economy to executive, as well as various types of minivans and minibuses for those traveling in a large group.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport is an “additional” airport of Istanbul, located in the area with funny name Pendik. Initially, it was built in order to relieve congestion at the main airport named after Ataturk. However, later it also became very popular among travelers (largely due to the fact that many low-cost airlines fly to this airport). In this article I will try not to overload you with unnecessary information. Therefore, I will put questions about how to buy cheap tickets to Istanbul, and in general why it is worth going to this city, in separate articles. Links to them will be provided in the text below. If you want, read it. For now, I will focus on transfer issues and briefly (as far as possible) tell you how to get to the center from Sabiha Gokcen Airport.

What is considered the center of Istanbul?

Most of Istanbul's attractions are located in the Fatih district (including the Sultanahmet quarter with the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace). This is a "tourist" center. Therefore, when speaking about the “center of Istanbul”, they usually mean this particular area.

However, Istanbul is Big city. Therefore, with a certain degree of convention, the center of the city here can be considered not only the historical Fatih Peninsula, but also Istiklal Street, Taksim Square, Eminönü pier next to the Galata Bridge and some other important points. In addition, a trip from the airport to the city usually first of all involves checking into a hotel and only secondly - visiting certain attractions.

I have already written about which part of Istanbul is better to live in in a separate article. Read it. It is very important. This way you can better understand the geography of the city, as well as understand how one district of Istanbul differs from another.

From this article you will learn :

How to get from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Kadikoy Marina and Taksim Square in different ways.
How to do this as cheaply and quickly as possible.
What is the Istanbul Card and why you still can’t do without it.
How to get to Taksim Square and Kadikoy Marina historic district Fatih (Sultanahmet).
How to get from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Ataturk Airport.

Option No. 1 Havabus (also often called Havatas)

Let's start with something simple. What is Havabus? In a nutshell, these are such beautiful modern buses that depart from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to the city every half hour. You can pay for the fare right inside - in cash to the driver.
The cost depends on the direction of travel.

  • A trip to Taksim Square will cost you 15 liras (3 euros);
  • To Kadikoy pier – 10 liras (2 euros).

Travel time: to Taksim Square – 1.5 hours; to Kadikoy pier – 1 hour.

The duration of the trip can change significantly if the bus gets stuck in traffic. This option is not excluded. But personally, I have driven this route twice without any problems. Therefore, the phrase “traffic jams are possible” does not mean at all that they will be there 100%.

Movement interval (departure time): from 4 am to 1 am. All details about these buses can be found on the company’s official website http://www.havabus.com. Prices and schedule may change.

Option #2. Bus E10 and E11

Regular city buses that will take you to Kadikoy pier. They also run constantly (every 20-30 minutes). Travel on the E10 bus is cheaper, but along the way it makes more than 60 (!!!) stops, so... It’s like in a children’s song: “If it takes a long, long, long time...”... So you take the E10 bus.

When to choose this bus (E10)? When there are no others. This is the only bus that travels from Sabiha airport ROUND THE CLOCK!

In all other cases, the E11 bus will be the best solution for you. Like the “ten”, he also goes to the Kadikoy pier, but along the way he makes “only” 19 stops (that is, three times less than his comrade). In fact, he drives the main part of the journey non-stop along some kind of highway. That's why he gets to the city much faster.

Travel time (E11): about an hour.

Among all the transfer options, this one, in my opinion, is the most optimal. The cost of travel on the E10 bus will be 2.15 liras (0.4 euros). Traveling on the E11 express route will cost twice as much - about 4 liras (0.8 euros).

However, hello... Or briefly about the Istanbul Card

Travel on buses E10 and E11 is great option get to the city from Sabiha Gokcen Airport. But, as always, there is one caveat: to travel you will first have to buy a special electronic travel pass, the Istanbul Card. It works in almost all types of transport in Istanbul and will be useful to you in the future.
It costs 6 liras. Sold at ticket offices, kiosks with the inscription Istanbul Card and in machines like this.

You can take one for two or even for the whole company. However, in this case, a regular trip (by metro, bus, tram or ship) will always cost you the full amount (for each). By purchasing an Istanbul Card for each traveler, you will receive discounts on every transfer. We got from point A to point B - paid 2.15 TL, changed to the next transport - already paid 1.45 TL. We went somewhere else and paid 1.15 TL. And so on. But I repeat: this is if everyone has their own card.

Is it possible to get from the airport to Istanbul without an Istanbul Card?? Yes, you can. The first option is to take the Havabus. The second (as in the case of E10 and E11 buses) is to purchase special tokens (at the ticket office or machine). One token costs 4 lira. To travel on the E11 express route you will need 2 tokens. And for the whole trip you will have to buy a whole handful of them.

Is it worth buying an Istanbul Card?? Yes, it's worth it. At least one for everyone. When traveling around Istanbul, you will have to use transport in any case. Therefore (I turn on Vanga mode) you will buy it anyway. It is better to resolve this issue immediately at the airport.

How does Istanbul Card work?? Have you bought a card? Now it still needs to be replenished. This can be done at the same yellow machines at bus stops or at some special ticket offices. When entering a vehicle (whether it be a bus, metro or ship), you must ping it using a special reader. That's all. Make yourself comfortable.

How to get to the center from Kadikoy pier?

Firstly... What is Kadikoy? This is a nice area located on the Asian side of Istanbul. Buses E10 and E11, as well as Havabus shuttles, will take you to this stop near the seashore.

A little to your left there will be a beautiful embankment, around there are many inexpensive cafes (with prices lower than in Europe), further away there are tea gardens, the fashionable Moda district and Haydarpasa Station, as one of the main attractions.

In principle, you can choose this area itself as a place to live in Istanbul (you will travel to the center by boat every day). Hotels in Kadikoy can be viewed.

Now we’re back in transport again... You can get to the center from the Kadikoy embankment on special ships. You will see them immediately. The fare will be about 2 liras. You can again use the Istanbul Card to pay for travel.

Travel time – 15 minutes.

Inside the ship.

Ships are sailing constantly. In fact, you get off the bus and immediately step onto the ship. The trip turns out to be pleasant. The ship has both open and closed decks. Therefore, during your trip you can enjoy many beautiful views Bosphorus.

Where will the ship take you?? To the Galata Bridge. Here it is (view from Karakoy pier).

If you see a lot of fishermen with fishing rods, it means you are there.

On one side of it is the Karakoy embankment. On the other hand, Eminonu. Both can already be considered the center of the city. From the shore of Karakoy it is more convenient to get to the Beyoglu region (where the Galata Tower is located, pedestrianized street Istiklal and Taksim Square). From the Eminonu shore it is more convenient to get to the Sultanahmet quarter (Fatih district). On this side there is the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and other attractions of Istanbul.

Before your trip, look on the map where your hotel is located and which coast (Karaköy or Eminönü) you should go to. I repeat – these are two banks that are connected by the Galata Bridge. From the Karakoy embankment you can sail to any of them. If anything, take a walk.

You can get to the Sultanahmet area from the Galata Bridge by tram T1(there are only a few stops there). IN historical center he stops at every pillar. Travel is again paid using the Istanbul Card.

An alternative option is to walk to the Blue Mosque. Even if you are a little over 30, I think you can walk 2 kilometers. To navigate in the city, use the MAPS.ME application or other similar ones. On the way, see the Egyptian market.

How to get to Sultanahmet from Taksim Square

Taksim Square.

Metro . From Taksim station to Yenikapi or Vezneciler station. From there it is another 2 kilometers on foot to the Blue Mosque. The fare is one “peak” Istanbul Card.

By tram . From Taksim Square you walk down towards the sea and Kabatas embankment. It's only about a kilometer there.

If you don't want to walk, you can use the funicular. When you get there, you will see the T1 tram line. Get on it and go to the center. It will take you straight to the Blue Mosque.

Status "Everything is complicated." Personal transfer from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to the city.

I’ll say right away that getting from the airport to the center is not as difficult as it might seem from the description given above. Once you get to the Galata Bridge, you won’t get lost there.

But if you still doubt your abilities and navigation skills, you can immediately order a personal transfer to your hotel before your trip. In this case, you will be met at the airport with a sign and taken straight to the hotel door without any problems. If you are traveling with your whole family, with a group of friends, or if you are just one of those people who have money, you can seriously consider this option too. They will meet you, take you, help you with your suitcases...
At the time of writing this article, a personal transfer from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to the Sultanahmet area costs 42 euros. You can order it in advance.

How to get from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Ataturk Airport

Option #1. Havabus buses. On one of them you will need to get to Taksim Square. On the other - to Ataturk Airport. The transfer will take a minimum of time - we got off one bus, stretched our legs and immediately boarded another.
The cost of the trip will be 27 liras (15 + 12). It's a little more than 5 euros.

Option #2. Bus E11 to Kadikoy embankment + metro to the airport. This option is cheaper, but it also involves several transfers (each of which is paid separately). Look at the map.

You need to get from station to station Havalimani. And this means two transplants. But look at what the famous Marmaray looks like (a sophisticated miracle metro connecting continents and passing right under the waters of the Bosphorus).

Option #3. Order a personal transfer here you can get from point A to point B without any transfers.

Option No. 4. With plenty of transfers and a minimal city tour. In fact, this is all the same as what I wrote above. Just when you walk around the Sultanahmet quarter and take a photo with all the mosques and palaces, you will need to walk on foot to the Yenikapi metro station or any other that is nearby. And go to that same Havalimani station. If you take the metro at Yenikapi station, you can do it without transfers.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport - Princes' Islands

It’s interesting that independent travelers who decide to vacation on the Princes’ Islands in Istanbul find it convenient to fly to Sabiha Gokcen Airport.

At the airport you need to take any bus that goes to the Asian pier Bostancı. And from there - take a ferry or vapor and very quickly sail to the islands. From Bostanci it is twice as close to the islands as from the center (Eminönü or Taksim).

Taxi from Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Istanbul

By taxi you can get to Sabiha Gokcen Airport from the center of Istanbul in 50 minutes. This is the fastest way even if there are delays on the roads. The price of a taxi from Sabih to the city in 2020 starts from 110 liras ($18) to 190 liras.

An alternative to a taxi that can make the trip cheaper is a transfer or group transfer from/to the airport. Transfer to the airport can be ordered online and paid for without leaving your home. And at the same time, slowly compare and choose the appropriate price.
