How much does a budget trip around the world cost? How much does it cost to travel around the world? How much money does it take to travel around the world.

"Not to be greedy is already wealth, not to be wasteful is income."
Cicero

One of the most popular questions we are asked is how much money we spent on a trip around the world.

But still, we want to emphasize again that for you, the main question should not be how much we spent, but how much you will spendwhen you yourself go on a journey.

In this article, I decided to analyze the factors that influence the formation of the cost of traveling around the world.

Hopefully, the information below will help you understand at least where to start planning your travel budget. And for someone it may be a discovery that great travel is much more affordable than it might seem! Let this be the first article in our blog on how to plan a pleasant, long, safe and cheap trip. We hope you find it useful.

Poll results

We conducted a survey in which we asked an intimate question: how much does it cost to travel around the world. Not that many responses were received (199 items in Russian). We must also take into account the specifics of our audience. Among our readers, on the one hand, there are many IT specialists with big salaries and big requests, on the other hand, there are many hitchhikers and hikers, as well as fellow travelers-bloggers.

There were only six answers in English, so I did not include these results in the graphs.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the survey and shared it with friends!

So, let's look at the most general result (on the horizontal axis, the price of one year of active and interesting travel around the world per person in US dollars):

As you can see, most people believe that it will take no more than $ 20,000 for one year of a round-the-world trip, while many are ready to keep within $ 5,000. Therefore, I decided to increase the zone to $ 20,000, and it shows that the most popular answer options are about $ 10,000 (a nice round amount), $ 3,000 and $ 6,000.

Around the world experience... Let's see how the result depends on whether the respondents have been around the world or are going to.

It turns out that those who are going to travel around the world are the most optimistic group =) Which, in general, is logical and correct. We have few answers from people who have traveled, but their answer is no longer a forecast, but a result. Most spent $ 10,000 or $ 20,000.

Floor... The estimate of the cost of traveling around the world by women is generally higher:

Income... As income levels rise, the estimated cost of traveling around the world also grows:

Age... The most optimistic estimates are given by the oldest and youngest survey participants:

Analysis of own income

Oddly enough, travel costs no longer depend on the average price of hotels in Asia or flights across the Atlantic.

It depends on how much money does a particular traveler travel with.

So the first thing.

Consider:

  • How much money do you make per month / year.
  • How much of this money can you save.
  • How many months / years are you willing to raise money.

Voila, there is a certain amount.

There are many articles-advice on how to increase this amount (for example, not to buy unnecessary items), I will not spray on this topic.

This amount is your reality, it determines your travel style, whether you will hitchhike and sleep in a tent or fly in a helicopter :)

Priority selection

On a long journey (say, more than two months) - this is a very important question.

The choice is usually trivial: time or money.

Let's say you have a list of places you want to visit. You can either skip it quickly using buses / airplanes / hotels or slowly savor it by hitchhiking and living for weeks in different places on work away or couchsurfing.

This will greatly affect the final cost of your trip.

Photo: getting ready to board a regular flight from to.

But the most important thing:

stay positive for any style of travel!

Strict planning

Expenditures

Let's consider what the cost of a trip around the world consists of and roughly estimate the amount.

Transport

The most expensive thing is, of course, transport. Especially intercontinental flights. As a rule, they cannot be avoided, there are a few cases when someone managed to overcome the ocean by air or hydrostop.

But still, the price can be made affordableif you monitor prices / discounts and buy tickets in advance.

When calculating the cost, you should immediately see how much long flights will cost in total. As a rule, these will be one-way flights.

At one time we considered the so-called round the world tickets, which are offered by most air alliances, but they turned out to be unreasonably expensive and the process of buying and confirming each flight was dreary. Later, the refusal of such tickets was justified, because the entire route had to be flown in a year.

It is impossible to take into account the costs of smaller movements =)

Prices change, plans change during the trip, as I wrote earlier.

Everything happens here for travelers by fallback method... As the money runs out, we move from the plane to buses and hitchhiking.

An example of a calculation, or an arithmetic problem for a second grade student.

Visa

This cost item is small but inevitable. It very much depends on your citizenship and the list of countries you are going to visit.

Let's say our backpacker spent $ 400.

Housing

There are three options:

1. Spend the night on couchsurfing or by appointment. Is free. Great for long trips. Requires experience and skills ("wisdom"). Where it didn't work out, we spend the night in a tent or in a cheap hostel.

If you haven't signed up for Airbnb yet:

Let's say that a French backpacker traveled for a year to inexpensive countries and on average paid $ 8 per night at the dorm:

8 $ * 365 (days in a year) = 2920 $

Food

Surprisingly, food is usually not expensive.

Especially in warm countries, where one meal costs US $ 1-4.

In addition, you can cook yourself, sometimes you will be fed by those you meet on the road, sometimes you will feed them.

Let's go back to our backpacker, $ 2 "seems to be" inexpensive:

$ 2 x 3 (meals) x 365 (days) = $ 2190

But then again, you can eat cheaper than some French backpacker.

The costs are related to the fact that all equipment must be purchased first, if it was not purchased before the start of the trip.

You may need a backpack, a tent, a camera, comfortable travel clothes and shoes, and other things that are not always necessary in everyday life. And it's all worth a lot.

Equipment has three negative properties: break, get lost, as well as the fact that it can be stolen. In this regard, costs increase: you need to repair or buy a new one.

Our backpacker bought himself a backpack (200) + sleeping bag (100) = $ 300. Friends gave him a tent and a cushion. In the course of the play, his shoes broke 2 times, plus a bunch of clothes worn out and leaked, and he spent another 300 on repairs and buying new junk.

Total $ 600.

Bars, alcohol, cigarettes, goodies

We are not monks, we are not blessed travelers. Our goal is not only to drive certain points on the globe.

Hence, there is a way for everyone to spend money on something unnecessary: alcohol, cigarettes, discos, etc.

There are backpackers who only hitchhike, but at the same time the money saved is spent on beer. Although here,. This is very individual.

Here it starts working for the calculation limitation principle.

Let's say we bet $ 1 per day - that's $ 30 per month, or $ 365 per year. It's a can of beer, or ice cream, or some fruit every day.

For a Western European backpacker we bet $ 3. (According to our observations, they drink a lot.)

Or $ 1068 per year.

Tickets for attractions and tours

The blogs of our compatriots are full of notes on how to get through for free. But, unfortunately, this is not possible everywhere, not everywhere we want to take a steam bath and put ourselves and the workers of the local tourism industry in an uncomfortable position.

We have with experience around the world, expenses are significantly reducedbecause we are less and less visiting the banal tourist places from the guide and more time we spend talking with people and nature, looking for beauty in the everyday life of other countries.

We also travel more on our own than on a tour.

Let's limit $ 100 per month. In general, it will not be enough. None, Machu Picchu and other things.

Total $ 1200 per year.

For the French backpacker, we will introduce a limit of $ 300 per month. He, as befits a bourgeois personality, will pay for "trekking", diving and riding in a hot air balloon.

$ 3600 per year.

The medicine

In distant countries, there is a great danger of getting sick, including unprecedented exotic diseases, as well as getting into an accident or getting injured.

It is very popular to buy cheap insurance that costs less than $ 100. She has enough coverage to cure a runny nose. If a tourist has an accident, there is enough coverage to pay for 1-3 days of the hospital.

therefore very important to have !

Moreover, the one that provides a large amount of coverage and includes various extreme sports (motorcycle, bicycle, hiking, diving, etc.).

Please add the cost of insurance to the estimate.

Also, in an amicable way, before leaving, you need to do vaccinations from various dangerous infections (yellow fever, typhoid, tetanus, etc.)

Further on Facebook / VKontakte they write that they urgently need to collect $ 100,500 for treatment, because the doctors did not manage to collect the victim in 1-3 days. In groups in Thailand and Indonesia, there are especially many such posts, because it is popular there to fall off a motorcycle. Let's say our backpacker bought it for $ 1000 per year.

Calculation for our backpacker

Class 0. European tourist. So our abstract French friend is going to spend:

6600 (transport) + 2920 (housing) + 2190 (food) + 600 (equipment) + 1068 (alcohol and snacks) + 3600 (tours) + 1000 (medicine) + 400 (visas) = 18379 $

Approximately 18-19k. Somehow it turned out a lot. Let's see how you can shorten.

Class 1. Greedy European tourist. No alcohol or cigarettes! We will limit the tours to $ 100 per month, we will take simpler equipment, we will limit the consumption for food by half (i.e., eat mainly rice and pasta with vegetables).

6600 (transport) + 2920 (accommodation) + 1000 (food) + 50 (equipment) + 1200 (tours) + 1000 (medicine) + 400 (visas) = 13170 $

Approximately 13-14k. Is it a lot anyway?

Class 2. Thrifty traveler and novice hitchhiker. We reduce transport costs by half. We will halve the cost of accommodation and tours (it means that we spend the night for free most of the time), we will delete some countries so as not to pay for a visa. We remove the cost of medicine (not recommended, but, in practice, often it is). We do not get sick, we cross the road carefully.

3000 (transport) + 1500 (accommodation) + 600 (food) + 50 (equipment) + 600 (tours) + 250 (visas) = 6000 $

6k money. Is it real already?

Nonetheless:

Class 3. Cool hitchhiker. This means that we travel only for free, for example, we pay only $ 2 * 1000 for flights across the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean and some ferries. We spend the night only for free, we do not take tours. We climb the sights like a pirate, i.e. exclusively free.

2000 (transport) + 0 (housing) + 50 (equipment) + 600 (food) + 0 (tours) = 2650 $

2-3k money.

Class 4. God of the hitchhiker. An almost unattainable ideal. To go through the seas and oceans by hydro or aircraft stop. As a rule, such a traveler knows how to please everyone and finds a common language with everyone. Including the chief of the Matumba tribe in Africa, who speaks only the language of his tribe. He is also able to convince him to let him in for free on a train, plane, museum, spend the night in the house, give him a free visa. And to convince exactly the people whom he sees for the first time.

We put 1 $ of expenses for one day and how much is in the reserve, let's say another 400 dollars. (We hope to return the reserve home! But part of it inevitably goes to visas.)

That is, less than 1k of money.

This class of travelers contains a huge number of people: these are students who hitchhike to the Crimea and sleep like a savage. And also grandmothers crossing half of the CIS as a hare on trains. Moreover, these grandmothers could easily make an almost free round the world if they wanted. But why do they need? They just want to see their granddaughter, bring jam and cucumbers, touch the holy relic with their lips, etc.

Very important: Travelers usually enter classes 3 and 4 not because they want to save money, but because they like this lifestyle. They love to communicate with drivers, look for appointments, they are comfortable with constant uncertainty, they are looking for adventure. If you are interested, you can read the books of Anton Krotov for inspiration.

Interesting to see what travel class did the survey participants choose.

It turned out somehow a lot of hitchhiking gods :)

To restore justice and get a more easily readable chart, I decided to remove those who are going to spend less than $ 365 (that is, less than $ 1 per day) and more than $ 30,000, then we get the following:

Factors shaping the cost of traveling around the world

If in the previous section there were objective things that are difficult to change, now we will try to consider what depends more on us.

Who do we travel with?

This is a very important question..

If we approach the issue of travel in a philosophical way, we can say that a traveler pays for every day on the road in two currencies: ordinary money and his own internal energy. The only difference is that the energy itself is renewed (free !!) when we sleep, have fun, drink wine, swim in the sea. If you run out of energy, you have to pay more money.

Everything is very simple.

There is no strength to wave your hand on the side of the road and wait for a passing car - go by bus, there is no strength to communicate with people on the list - you go to the hotel, there is no strength to look for a cheaper hotel, go to the one that was first caught.

The list of options for making travel more expensive is endless.

And here your travel companion is very important.

He (she) can replenish your strength with a kind word, hugs and other things, and also reduce his irritability and sour face. The fellow traveler carries part of the general equipment in his backpack, runs to look for a hotel when he is no longer strong. Conducts correspondence on couchsurfing.

The choice of a fellow traveler determines not only how pleasant it will be to explore the big world, but also how expensive it will be.

Traveling alone has a number of advantages, but also many disadvantages. This will generally be more expensive and more difficult.

The need for rest

The constant change of place and the mass of impressions can cloud our mind. With each week of the road, we become less susceptible to the wonders that new countries open to us.

We become more distracted, lose our belongings, be late for the bus, etc.

I want to go home.

Therefore, on a long journey, you need to plan stops in pleasant inexpensive places to catch your breath, relax, plan a further route, and sort out the accumulated photos.

In general, I believe that properly planned rest stops reduce costs :)

For example, the bulk of this article was written when we were staying for one week with friends in Punta Arenas in Chile (thanks, Stasya and Daniel!).

Experience

During the journey, we not only learn about the world, but also learn to travel. We analyze our mistakes, communicate with other travelers, read the Internet, and thus gain new knowledge and skills.

Most likely, a person who has already wandered the world a lot with his brain turned on, will spend less money than the one who first left his city. Since he knows how to buy tickets and book a car at a better price. If this is a different style of travel, then he knows where to get up in order to quickly stop the passing car, how to spend the night for free (or cheaply), where to get cheap food.

When Marina and I went around the world, in a month we noticed how our expenses began to decrease rapidly. You can gain experience faster if you travel with experienced companions. (Or if you read our blog!)

Planning a trip around the world: seasons and holidays

A person who has had to open some modern guidebook probably noticed that the story of a country often begins with its seasons. They are associated with the climate, holidays and other factors that make a visit to the country most favorable.

There are 4 types of seasons: low, high, peak and transitional.

In the low season, visiting the country can be extremely unpleasant (for example, temperatures as low as -40, or eternal rains) or even pointless.

Although, there are opposite examples.

Amid the sound of a downpour, we took pictures and wrote a blog, planning what to see in Indonesia. It was cold! In the evening it was always sunny, we swam in the sea and enjoyed the sunset. Plus we tried parasailing at half the price.

Obviously, during peak seasons (like Christmas and New Years), prices skyrocket.

Around the world expenses are largely determined by whether you can plan logistics in such a way that everywhere get into a good seasonso as not to get overpriced and at the same time not make unnecessary movements over long distances.

The cost of our trip around the world

This article was written when we spent more than a year and a half around the world, and it was coming to an end. And so we decided to roughly calculate our expenses. It will not be possible to determine exactly, since the bank in which we kept some of the money went bankrupt, and our financial history in it disappeared.

For the first year of travel for one person, we spent about $ 11,000.

The most significant expense items for the first year:

1. :) It took about $ 2500 per person. We did OWD, AOWD and Nitrox certification, went on a dive safari, dived 49 dives.

2. Intercontinental flights: $ 2200 per person:

  • Kiev -: 600 $
  • Manila -: $ 800
  • San Francisco -: $ 800

    How could you save

I'll tell you right away that this amount can be significantly reduced, if you hitchhike or cycle, but then a trip like ours will take 3-5 years instead of 1.5 years.

I repeat once again that such a hitchhiking and cycling trip is not a way of saving, but a way of knowing the world. A hitchhiker and a cyclist notices what an ordinary traveler like us does not see.

But we could not afford to delay the trip, we had other urgent matters. And the goal was set to visit several parts of the world, to feel what life is like in different countries.

    How about travel work

Someone will rightly notice that you can work while traveling.

Can even come back in positive territory.

I think this is a topic for a separate article. For now, I'll write that Marina and I quickly rejected this idea for various reasons.

Firstly, we wanted to make a big change in the way of life, to ventilate the brain, to relax.

Secondly, we wanted to move quickly, actively, and spend all our free time on the journey itself, planning, parsing photos / videos and blogging.

    Conclusions from the above

If someone says that he traveled for $ 200 for 6 months, this does not mean that you can do that. Likewise, just because a friend of yours spent $ 8,000 in one month in the States does not mean that you can never travel around the States with your modest salary.

    Your budget is very individual!

You just need to collect as much money as you can and decide to hit the road.

A truly round-the-world trip is more of an adventure, an adventure than a pre-planned act, because we have an equation in which there are too many unknowns, and, in the end, that's the beauty of it.

    Good luck in your endeavors!

I am often asked - "Lyova, how is it that you can?" Usually people are interested in two things: where do I get so much vacation from, and where do I get so much money. Vacation is simple - that leaves me time to travel. As for money, I honestly never counted how much I spend on my trips.

But I think it's time to figure out how much such a life full of travel costs me ...

In order not to go far, let's take 2017 as an example. Over the past year, I have been traveling for 138 days, and managed to visit 15 countries (including several trips to the USA):

Those of you who actively follow my blog know that it is atypical, so I will not take it into account. After all, I definitely cannot afford to have such a break every year for the winter holidays.

Since I love flying to Asia and Europe, and for that I have to cross the oceans, airfare is one of the most important expenses. Here for me - with their help I made five transoceanic flights in 2017. Moreover, he did it in business, and even in the first class. (Miles is the best way to fly business class.) Hard to forget with their double beds on board.

But for the rest of the flights I paid with honestly earned money (and therefore, I flew mostly economy!). I am a loyal customer of Delta, and if I already buy air tickets, I try to fly with Delta or their Skyteam partners. For the last couple of years, they have been tracking the dollar equivalent of flights spent throughout the year. I went to look at this at the end of 2017, and saw this:

It was sometime in November and Delta counted me $ 4,826. In fact, this number does not take into account taxes and fees (say, about $ 700), and in my case, there was still an upcoming flight to Buenos Aires, which cost one and a half thousand dollars. In the end, I figured that I had spent about $ 7,000 on flights.

Then I thought that this could be easily checked, and it was useful to add up all the tickets purchased for 2017. It turned out a little more - somewhere $7,500 .

This does not include domestic flights. There weren't that many of them, though in 2017, and I also took some for miles. But I decided to count them together with the rest of the costs "on the spot".

Here everything is simple for me - there is no way (or desire) to calculate every penny spent. Therefore, I estimate that staying abroad average costs me $ 200 daily... This includes overnight stay, food, travel, etc. There are cities and countries that are more expensive, others are much cheaper. But in general, in my opinion it turns out that way on average.

For example

Of course, you can travel much cheaper. For example, I always prefer to stay in centrally located hotels. The number of stars doesn't really bother me, but the proximity to the center is yes. I often go to expensive restaurants, especially when traveling with gourmet friends. How to go for example and not try there?

Anyway, you can choose initially inexpensive countries - so I know there are guys who can spend a whole month somewhere for $ 500! But I don't like to save a lot on trips. At the same time, I don’t think that I’m spending a lot of money. Although probably no one thinks so.

In short, to understand the approximate costs in this way, we take this $ 200 and multiply it by 138 days. It turns out $27,600 ... I just saw it, and it seemed like a lot. But nothing can be done.

So what comes out? My total annual travel budget comes out - somewhere $35,000 ... At the current exchange rate, this is just over two million rubles.

Do you think this is a lot? Did you expect more? Or less? Perhaps, if I did not spend that kind of money on constant travel, I could afford to live somewhere in the center of New York, and not (which, on the other hand, are closer to JFK airport!)

The financial issue is one of the most pressing when it comes to travel, especially long ones. Few can imagine how you can leave everything and leave for several years to travel around the world. That is why it was interesting for me to post this guest post about guys who have been on the road for a year and a half, and their incomes are pretty ordinary, they do not earn fabulous money there, but are available to the majority. So why does someone drive, and someone only dreams? But let's get away from philosophy, let's see in practice how much money can go, and what we get for this money, moving from country to country.

What is the post about

If your heart calls you - do not be afraid and do not resist.

This article is intended for those who are interested in the practical part of travel. For those who need to assess their own desire and its correlation with the possibilities. We will tell you about life and money on the way by our example and by the example of our continuing (at the moment one and a half year old) trip around the world.

Of course, it's worth starting with the fact that budget travel Is a piece that is becoming more famous and more popular in Russia every year. Many travelers make routes, inconceivable in terms of time and space, not only with a small budget (Valery Shanin and his "World Tour for $ 280" through 14 countries), but also practically without him (Vladimir Nesin and his travels barefoot: according to the traveler, the only one a fixed amount is a pension of 7,000 rubles a month). It is worth mentioning Anton Krotov, the creator of the Academy of Free Travel, author and co-author of many published useful guidebooks on how to travel with minimal cost.

All in all, the world is full of great romantics, practical travelers who share their experiences. And if the question "to go or not to go" is limited only by money, we recommend looking for information about the above and other free travelers on the Internet - their experience inspires action.

In the National Park "Sequoia", USA

Money at the time of launch (what we had)

Now, about our approach. There was no thorough preparation for the trip around the world. It took us about two months from idea to implementation. All figures are given below for two.

  • money for obtaining an American visa (the only one made before departure) 11880 rubles,
  • money for the first tickets: Moscow-Irkutsk train 11,600 rubles, Irkutsk-Harbin airplane 222 EU,
  • freelance work, based on which we were able to plan a monthly budget of 30,000 rubles (for two)
  • a small margin for different deposits, which we planned to spend (and spent) at the end of their term when going beyond the planned budget and in case of unforeseen expenses.

The good thing about budget planning and cost tracking is that you create a kind of zero-point, a bar against which you can evaluate your own strengths and the possibilities of staying in a particular country. Of course, in different countries and opportunities these are different, but a limited amount per month helps to be more vigilant.

For example, here is the statistics that we managed to compile due to this vigilance:

Expenses that include almost everything - travel, accommodation, food. Calculation per month for two (visa fees are indicated for one), validity: late 2013 - early 2015.

  • China- 24-26 thousand rubles (including a tourist visa for 1 month - 1200 rubles);
  • Laos and Vietnam - 20 thousand rubles (both in the first and in the second country for Russians, a visa is not required if the stay does not exceed two weeks);
  • Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia - 15-20 thousand rubles (Cambodian visa US $ 25);
  • Indonesia- 26-28 thousand rubles (US $ 25 - visa with a stay of up to 1 month, to stay longer, a tourist visa in Bali was renewed)
  • Australia- 400 $ AU at the rate of 1 $ AU = 33 rubles (Australian tourist visa for a period of stay up to 3 months 145 US $);
  • USA- 30-35 thousand rubles, the exchange rate at that time was 35 rubles per dollar, including the cost of gasoline and a car, the visa was paid back in Moscow, and we were given a period of stay at the border - six months.
  • Mexico (Guadalajara) - 30 thousand rubles (visa-free regime with a stay of up to six months - upon entry or exit, you must pay a customs fee of $ 28 US).
  • Mexico (Cancun) - 30 thousand rubles at the beginning, and it was here that we saw the growth of the dollar exchange rate, in connection with which, the monthly expenses in terms of rubles increased greatly to 40 thousand.

And now let's talk about the most burning question: our ways of earning... As practice shows, not many people believe in the possibility of making money on the way. Often, this disbelief becomes the cause of a "requiem for a dream." We are surprised when we pass by young, drunken homeless people: “Hands in place, head in place! Why doesn't he find a job to live a normal life? " The most important thing is to remember that if there are no physical limitations, then you are unlikely to disappear, wherever you are. And even with limited health, the brave in spirit find their calling or seek it. The most difficult obstacles are in the mind, which means that it is only in our power to “remove” them.

We have long been addicted to the "freelance" regime. He has two significant advantages - mobility and the ability to search for a case in spirit; and one drawback - the amount of money earned directly depends on the time spent on work. We list below everything we use - something bigger is going to be made of grains.

Our ways to make money

Copywriting

From the very beginning of our journey, we had several partners, for whom we wrote custom articles. Payment ranged from 600 rubles to 25 $ US for an article with photographs, or 10 $ for a copyright of articles on our site.

Programming, administration, SEO

The source of work is regular clients or clients who come on recommendations. A week of work brings on average $ 200 US, a month can be up to $ 1000 US. It is not necessary once at a time, the amount of money depends on the "success" of the project, as well as on the time invested.

Link exchanges. Advertising on sites

Passive income that takes almost no time - 80-100 US $ per month.

Photographing

Private photo sessions. It brings good profit, but due to our elusiveness - not often. Photo sessions with different conditions from US $ 100 per hour (here you need to take into account that the photographing itself is followed by hours and days of post-processing).

Illustration, design

Clients come based on recommendations. The cost depends on the project. A significant disadvantage is that a suitable space is required for work: a table, the ability to "expand" with a graphic tablet - it is difficult to implement with constant moving, but possible at moments of rest from the road.

Guide

One of the most interesting types of earnings is done locally. This opportunity opened up for us only in Mexico, but we can try to continue. The working day of the guide (depending on the tasks) from 50-150 US $.

Paid Videos

Recently, our favorite partner suggested making a video specifically for a specific project. These are three-four-minute motivational videos collected from our material.

Sound streams

An example of a not very successful attempt :) For a year and a half, the sale of sounds on the stock brought 5 $ US, and even bringing this money into reality turned out to be a problem.

Sale of printed photos on foam board

Unsuccessful attempt. We have made a photo shop on our website. Everything in mind: with a catalog, with beautiful pictures, with a basket. There were several orders, unfortunately, delivery fails. We could not find a good performer - across the cities of Russia, photographs printed on foam board were delivered broken and broken. I had to abandon the idea.

Soundaround.me project

Our project is non-commercial, but around it there are some suggestions for our readers that may be pleasant to them, and at the same time support our idea. In practice, this is more moral help, but it is no less important. For example, custom-made postcards brought in a total of 2,000 rubles in a year and a half (from each postcard sent, about 10-50 rubles remain on the project's account, depending on the country of departure).

Voluntary donations - support coming from our friends and relatives, for a year and a half, about 15 thousand rubles.

Where does the money go when traveling?

Of course, in our case, the averaged mode is most convenient. Constant movement does not contribute to excess income, so we try to avoid excesses in spending. Of course, sometimes we do not deny ourselves certain joys, but now we are not talking about them. The next step is to highlight the main cost items on our way.

Based on the set monthly budget, we, guided by the mood, balanced in terms of spending. For example, if the hitchhiker released the funds provided for movement, we could spend them on food; if we slept in a tent, we could travel part of the way by public transport, and so on.

Food

The most constant main waste. More than half of our budget, since proper and timely nutrition is the key to good mood and health.

There are countries that are completely cheap and abundant in this regard. There are terribly expensive ones. The smallest amount recorded per person (one meal) is in Laos, the city of Luang Prabang - in terms of kip at the rate of 2013 - 20 rubles. The most expensive food we found was in Australia. For example, a gallon (frozen, because it is overdue by an average of a week) milk in the bush (Australian desert) - from $ 5 AU. I don't even want to talk about the cost of cafes and eateries.

Transport

Our 1993 Honda Civic, USA

Internationally, we try to use all types of transport, choosing the most optimal for the price. There are only six flights on our way so far, the cheapest of them is 40 US $ for two from Malaysia to Indonesia, and the most expensive from Melbourne (Australia) to Honolulu (USA, Hawaii) is 800 US $ (also for two).

In those countries where intercity transport (over long distances) is expensive, it was not used. These are: Australia, America and still Mexico. In Asia - from China to Indonesia - trains, buses, and even airplanes were used. Interestingly, a bus on Java Island from Jakarta to Bali turned out to be the same cost as the flight, while direct travel on the ground takes several days (if without stops) - a test not for the weak!

Tent

Without a tent, we would not have ended up in the wild hot springs in the mountains of the USA

When you know that your home is with you, you become less dependent on circumstances. It's not scary to stay in the mountains or jungle for the night. And even if you don't feel like sleeping in a tent, its mere presence adds confidence when bidding for a room.

Second hand, recycle and local production

Where there are good second-hand shops, use them. In other places, it is a pleasure to try on what the locals wear in Latin America, and in Asia, too.

Workarounds to attractions

Archaeological site of Uxmal, Mexico

No, we are happy to support the country's economy or the fortune of a private owner ... when we can afford it and does not present us with a choice like "eat or look at ...". In other cases, we try to take everything available to the maximum, it does not matter what blocks the path: a fence with security, jungle or mountains - sometimes you have to strain physically - but it's worth it. This is our way - we do not call on anyone to break the law :)

Healthy lifestyle

We are not ardent opponents of anything, no. The fact remains - alcohol and cigarettes are almost always expensive, but they are completely unnecessary (sometimes they generally increase any risks). It is even more economical to be vegetarians, but we have mastered this Level only partially and from time to time :) This can also include the refusal of any "snacks" such as chips - this is absolutely beneficial in all respects.

Summarizing the above

Our life on a long-term journey in the material plane is very similar to the usual life in one place. All the same thoughts: where and how to make money in order to travel and live as you like, according to your heart.

We are now preparing for the next part of our journey: a motorcycle tour of South America. During the six months we stopped in Mexico, we managed to learn a lot of new things, complete old projects, invent and implement new ones. I managed to earn a little, while the missing amount to buy a motorcycle, but at least something. It is possible that after some time there will be a person among the readers who knows the companies who need advertising. Perhaps this way we will find ourselves partner friends who are ready to provide some of the equipment (helmets, protection, etc.) on the South American route in exchange for advertising a product or brand.

We love to dream :) And no less than that, we love to realize our dreams. This is the only way to live! We believe that long-term travel is one of the keys to learning about life, interesting and rich.

Let your travels last exactly as long as you want and only run into surmountable obstacles!

We will be glad if we inspire by our example!

Read, watch, listen to us on the following resources:

  • http://soundaround.me Our travel site for thoughtful stories

It all depends on how many and which countries you want to visit. The budget will consist of the following components: visas, flights / transfers, hotels, money with you.

Suppose a trip around the world will affect all continents except Antarctica. Then we will take the following route as a basis: Russia - Hong Kong - Australia - USA - Brazil - South Africa - Great Britain - Russia.

I must say right away that these are only rough estimates and not the best option. But it will give an idea of the average cost of such a tour. The countries selected are quite expensive. You can always save on the country / logistics, or, conversely, stretch both the time of stay and the cost.

Moscow - Hong Kong: 20,000 rubles per ticket.

Hong Kong - Sydney: 35,000 rubles per ticket (16,000 with a transfer).

Sydney - New York: 65,000 rubles (31,000 with a stopover)

New York - Rio de Janeiro: 90,000 rubles (57,000 with a stopover)

Rio de Janeiro - Cape Town: 70,000, with stopover only.

Cape Town - London: 57.000 (25.000 with stopover)

London - Moscow: 12,000 (7,000 with a stopover).

This means that we will spend from 226,000 to 349,000 on flights. I'll tell you right away whether it makes sense to look for shares or change cities. It is possible that the flight from New York to Sao Paulo will be cheaper than to Rio. But in this situation, we are calculating.

Australia - 130 Australian dollars (6200 rubles)

USA - 160 USD (11.000 rubles)

South Africa - 1800 rubles

United Kingdom - 136 dollars (9200 rubles)

Total: 28.200 rubles.

Hotels

We are looking at not the most expensive options, 2 nights in each country.

Hong Kong - 6.000 rubles

Sydney - 15,000 rubles

New York - 12,000 rubles

Rio - 7.000 rubles

Cape Town - 5.000 rubles

London - 12,000 rubles

Total: 57,000 rubles.

Money with you

This means that our trip will cost us no less than 400,000 rubles. The price can be reduced to about 300 if you live only in hostels, fly very crookedly and eat in supermarkets, or choose cheaper countries (Vietnam, Peru, Mexico, any other African country, Portugal, etc.). More expensive - easily, up to infinity.

Don't forget about things like health insurance and cell phones. In principle, in the presence of wi-fi, you can refuse from a cellular phone, while insurance will not affect the total cost of the trip so much.

About 170,000 rubles for flights.

A trip around the world is somewhat more difficult - and more expensive - than that. But there are options.

With such a long and difficult journey, many more factors have to be taken into account, which is very exhausting, and the cheapness of the road may no longer be a priority. For example, you need to be much more careful about transport schedules, because it is one thing to miss a plane from Italy to Slovakia and remain forced to fly home from Italy (you can still keep within 10 thousand rubles and a maximum of a couple of days), it is quite another thing to get into the same the situation in, say, Hong Kong. Therefore, let everyone set priorities for himself.

And yet, here are some universal tips and techniques:

Bonus programs of airlines, online travel agencies (pssst) or banks. This is, of course, the most common place - it is a very tempting opportunity to buy a ticket from purchases that you have already made.

RTW tickets - round-the-world tickets. These tickets are offered not by individual airlines, but, as a rule, by air alliances - there are options, say, Star Alliance or OneWorld. It works as follows: depending on the fare, your ticket is allocated either a certain number of miles, or a certain number of flights, which you can distribute at your discretion, but always in advance. The Star Alliance, for example, has a ticket containing 39,000 miles, enough to travel to all continents. The problem with the approach is that such a ticket will come with a fairly large volume of conditions, which will have to be strictly observed. For example, being late for any flight will invalidate all subsequent flights on your itinerary receipt. These tickets cost from $ 2,500 and generally help save up to a third of total ticket costs.

If a traveler has a task not only to walk around the planet, but also to have time to see more, then there is such an idea: to search in each major region for local low-cost airlines and their hubs (places from where / where most of their flights fly). This can be done on the websites of the respective companies or such an interesting service. In Europe, such hubs include London, in the Middle East - Dubai, in North America - New York, and so on. Low-cost airlines are generally a worldwide practice and a real salvation for the frugal traveler. For comparison: there is one such carrier in Russia, six in China, and seven in the USA. Thus, being, for example, in Hong Kong, you can fly around all the countries of the region, at least in one city (Tokyo, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Shanghai), paying up to 5000 rubles for the flight.

Residence. Everything is standard here - Booking, AirBNB, Couchsurfing and so on. And another idea - some (and sometimes quite tangible) segments of the route can be done on water on liners, which itself solves the problem of accommodation. From Moscow you can easily go down the rivers to Vienna and Budapest, and beyond; from Guangzhou to Singapore, and so on.

More about accommodation. There is such a thing - a stopover. This is when you fly somewhere with a transfer, and the transfer itself can take quite a long time, sometimes up to 96 hours. During this time, you can have time to walk around the city, if the visa allows and see everything in general. Stopovers are typical for large sites like Istanbul or Dubai. Where to find out about them? In the rules of the fare for the ticket. This is generally a general rule - ALWAYS read the tariff rules. The beauty of the concept is that the stopover is often free (at the expense of the airline) with a stopover, for example, at an airport hotel.

Now let's try to figure out the route. We will move out from Moscow, and we will return there:

All continents:

Moscow - Vilnius, by train Yantar, September 27.

Lisbon - Casablanca - Rio de Janeiro, Royal Air Maroc, October 4, from 19,733 rubles.

It turned out, of course, a very hasty route, with minimal stops at each point, but it gives us an idea that traveling in this way, we can go around the planet for the amount from 170,000 rubles, without any discounts and promotions.

Now we need to estimate how much the accommodation will cost. The task is rather vague, since only each traveler moves at his own pace. Someone will move along this route for a year or more, someone like us - in a little over a month.

However, here are the following numbers to understand.

In warm and cozy Europe, you can stay at different campgrounds and hostels for 10 euros, like in Rome, for example, or in

Almost every person to whom we tell that we left home a year and a half ago asks how much money we use to travel around the world and how we manage it. In this article, which we specially wrote for the online magazine Life-trip, we will tell you how you can live, work, spend money, save in budget travel around the world, what is its cost.

What is the post about

If your heart calls you - do not be afraid and do not resist.

This article is intended for those who are interested in the practical part of traveling around the world. For those who need to assess their own desire and its correlation with the possibilities. We will tell you about life and money on the way by our example and by the example of our ongoing (at the moment one and a half year old) trip around the world and our budget.

The good thing about budget planning and cost tracking is that you create a kind of zero-point, a bar against which you can evaluate your own strengths and the possibilities of staying in a particular country so that your trip around the world lasts as long as you want.

  • China- 24-26 thousand rubles (including a tourist visa for 1 month - 1200 rubles);
  • Laos and Vietnam - 20 thousand rubles (both in the first and in the second country for Russians, a visa is not required if the stay does not exceed two weeks);
  • Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia - 15-20 thousand rubles (Cambodian visa US $ 25);
  • Indonesia- 26-28 thousand rubles (US $ 25 - visa with a stay of up to 1 month, to stay longer, a tourist visa in Bali was renewed)
  • Australia- 400 $ AU at the rate of 1 $ AU = 33 rubles (Australian tourist visa for a period of stay up to 3 months 145 US $);
  • USA- 30-35 thousand rubles, the exchange rate at that time was 35 rubles per dollar, including the cost of gasoline and a car, the visa was paid back in Moscow, and we were given a period of stay at the border - six months.

Our ways to make money on a trip around the world

Sound streams

For a year and a half, the sale of sounds on the stock brought $ 45 US. We have an account at audiojungle.net.

Partnership programs

The main income for travel blogs. We just started moving in this direction in March 2016. We installed an Airbnb affiliate program. We also put banners and links of affiliate programs found on travelpayouts: car rental, sale of tours, insurance. Let's see what the result will be in a couple of months.

Sale of handmade jewelry

At the end of 2015, Nastya became interested in creating jewelry made of metal, natural stones and macrame. She posts some of her works on her Instagram. We tried to sell them in Colombia (Medellin, Cartagena) and in Ecuador (Banos). There are sales, but not many. We tried to sell on Etsy, but there we need additional cash investments in advertising and promotion of the store, it’s not so easy to get promoted until it’s been postponed.

Project site

Our project is non-commercial, but around it there are some suggestions for our readers, which may be pleasant to them, and at the same time support our idea. In practice, this is more moral help, but it is no less important. For example, custom postcards brought in a total of about 3 thousand rubles in two and a half years.

Voluntary donations - support coming from our friends and relatives, for two and a half years, about 30 thousand rubles.

The very fact that you can travel from point A to point B absolutely free is wonderful. Well, and also all sorts of bonuses in the form of acquaintances and complete immersion in the life of the country in which you are staying. It works, it helps out.

Burner

Our alcohol burner

Cooking yourself in practice turns out to be more economical. Food is always cheaper if not cooked. Sometimes, you don't have to worry - in Asia it is difficult to stay hungry even with a minimal budget. Where there is no street food, but cafes and restaurants are frankly expensive.

Without a tent, we would not be in the wild hot springs in the mountains of the USA
