Valaam is an island of Lake Ladoga, its size is 8 km from north to south, 8.5 km from west to east, the western part is connected to the shore by a road bridge (near the village of Tiurula), in the east the rocky shores of Kilpoly are washed by Ladoga, in the south the skerries of Ulankalselka and Lekhmalahti .

01:45 pm - Around the world in Ladoga

Hi all!
This week my two children (a boy 3.10 and a girl 1.8) took a trip around Lake Ladoga. Five days in the car and in interesting places, four nights in a tent, more than 1000 kilometers and a million stories and adventures. I’m sharing a summary of all this - short stories, marks on the map and routes, some photos and impressions.

Entire route

First day

Start from home 8:00

Stop in Sukhodolye - drive through the Gromovo platform immediately to the right along the tracks and turn into the field to the lake - awesome beach, sand, clean entry, you can fish (pike), put the tent almost by the water. But there are a lot of people.

Sukhodolye

Stop in Priozersk. Entering the fortress. Entrance fee (about 10 rubles). You can swim nearby, although there are signs that it is prohibited. In Priozersk there is a monument to Mowgli and Bagheera. We had a snack that we bought in the store, but it was better to have lunch nearby at the Gazprom gas station (they have great sandwiches, coffee, and sausages).

Priozersk

It took a long time to find an overnight stay, although we were prepared (we printed out maps and came up with several parking spots). We tried three or four variants of races: before Mikli, in Mikli and after them. Everywhere there were houses or a very rocky coast, we came across a couple of camp sites (but wanted wild places with a tent), cow pastures and just steep rocky slopes. I advise everyone looking for parking to go much further beyond Sortovala or spend the night closer to Priozersk for the first time.

Sheaves along the road in search of an overnight stay

I'll say it again. We passed Lochdenpolya and began to look for a place in the Miynala area. Mikli, before Mikli and beyond Miinal. Well, be scared, these are all our names, not Finnish ones;)))

Here there was nowhere to stay - either cows, or boats, or recreation centers, and simply couldn’t find a site for a tent

And here in Rautolahti we found a place for our first night

We found a place in Rautolahti on a lake inside a village. Between the houses and the camp site. Turn according to the tourist center sign. A rocky slope (plateau), on it a pine tree (standing alone), a boat ramp. Often those who go to Lake Ladoga (and the village is located on it) go out on kayaks. We met the guys after a five-day hike, for example (and saw others in the evening). You can swim, but the descent is not very pleasant (rocks, silt). The tent stands above the water on the rocks. There is plenty of space for several tents. The disadvantages for us are that it is difficult for children to get into the water and that we are not standing in the forest or on the shore, but in the village. But it's not scary at all. You can go out by boat. We fished, but didn't catch anything. The owners of the geese offered cucumbers in the morning;) the children dined on potatoes, tomatoes and stewed meat. Everyone had porridge for breakfast.

The first place to spend the night is under a pine tree on the slope. And our miracle tent from Decathlon for 6000. Two rooms, in the vestibule you can stand up to your full height. Double, warm, very easy to assemble.

The first camp dinner and a mega-miracle pot, which we will later lose

A jar for observing insects, which we will also lose later, but which really occupied the kids

Second day

Let's go to Sortovala. The Internet caught normally only there (3G). We found a normal post office and grocery store there. We moved to the waterfall in Rytty. The approach to the waterfall is fenced - a small hydroelectric power station has been built. You need to get to the gate of the power station, and then, to see the waterfall, we follow the path to the left along the stones. A very beautiful waterfall, but the approach itself is quite dangerous - over rocks. It’s scary, but in an ergo-backpack holding the hand of the youngest and the elder is ideal. We walked around the waterfall.

We moved to Ruskeala. We found a few more along the way beautiful waterfalls right along the highway. There are recreation areas with gazebos and water balloons. There is a cafe and a shooting range. They say you can swim there.

Ruskeala great place where you can spend a whole day or half a day. There are paths around the marble quarry, you can swim along it by boat (hour = 400 rubles) - the quarry is filled with water to about half the depth, eat hamburgers (100-200 rubles) and sausages, fly on a tightrope and ride a tightrope (how is it right I don’t know what it’s called, but it costs 1000 rubles). There is a nearby rope park. And in Ruskeala, I highly recommend finding and photographing a map of the area - where else you can go. It was with this map that we found a place for our next overnight stay - the shore of an uninhabited lake, among hunting grounds. The road to it: we leave the park back onto the highway, turn left and move 500-1000 meters to the exit. We pass a small lake on the left (we don’t stop there, they say it’s a solid swamp), then on the left there will also be a drive over stones (a large block). There we found an ideal and God-forsaken place - a separate place for a tent, for a car, an equipped place for cooking, a descent to the water over stones and the descent into the water itself - stone plateau. Cool! And no one around. There are a lot of fish on the lake (we ate fish soup), and there lives an otter (fishing in the evenings). At night in the forest, someone was shooting and howling (independently of each other at different times). The children had fun swimming off the rocks; dad caught 6 crucian carp from a funny inflatable boat. But we slept worse than on the first day. It was colder, our little one woke up more often and personally I caught every sound nearby (the birds almost didn’t sing and any rustle instilled fear).

More waterfalls on the road to Ruskeala (you can see it directly from the highway)

Where to stay

A brilliant plan for where to pitch your tent. We used the highest wild parking lot. In general, in this part of Ladoga there are many special parking places and it is very difficult not to notice them.

Our parking lot. Perfect.

Sunset

The third day

We started the third day by sailing on the lake by boat, but in the morning we didn’t catch anything. We got ready and drove through Sortavala (Internet, maps, provisions for the next days) to the White Bridges waterfall. Our path ran through a mountain with a cave (one name from the cave, nothing interesting) and a panoramic view (but that costs a lot). In the city of Lyaskelya we go down to Lake Ladoga and as soon as we enter locality(in my opinion, Handenselga on the Janisyarvi River) we are looking for any path leading up the mountain - at the very top there is both a view and a cave. The cave turns out to be just a drop down, but the view is worth everything.

Panoramic platform.

From here we brought a birch sapling to our plot. I think it's priceless

White Bridges Waterfall is not difficult to find. You must first get to the car area along the A121 road (Sortavala road) (after turning to Pitkyaranta we look for a left turn - it’s more difficult to write than to find))). And on the dirt road, always follow the yellow signs. When you get the hang of it, walk 2-3 kilometers to the waterfall (if your car allows it, you can drive there). The waterfall itself, despite the name, turns out to be black, not white, but beautiful;) you can stay overnight on the lake next to it, but we drove further along the A121 to Lake Säksjärvi with sandy beaches. In front of him on the road there will be two lakes, where you can also stop for the night, and the entire lake Säksjärvi is full of races with places right on the beach and on the rocks. But there (on the beaches) it’s very dirty (and smells bad))) We found a remote place on the rocks with space for a kitchen, laundry, tent, cooking and what not. The downside is that it’s still not on the beach, but on the rocks (but flatter than last night), and quite close to the road (we can hear it). But few people drive (not traffic-traffic). And not wild jungle. Let's move on.

Day four

I didn’t want to leave the lake at all, but there was a long way to go. On the way to Pitkäranta we came across many monuments and the very beautiful Cross of Sorrow. The forests nearby are pine, like in a fairy tale. There is Lukoil in Pitkäranta (we were scared to fill the car with diesel at strange gas stations, we were looking for something familiar), the city is very beautiful sandy beaches. We found almost a bay - shallow, sandy, clean, although they said that yesterday there was still seaweed. In principle, you can park there too. It’s also dirty, though, and there are a lot of people. But there is a place.

Pitkäranta

Then we moved along the Kola highway towards Olanets. The road is terrible. The average speed is 70 km and cannot be overtaken. But there are almost no cars. In Olanets we drove through the fields, along the river and on a side road we went back to the Kola highway (shorter in kilometers). We reached Lodeynoye Pole, where we went shopping in the Svir River. The entrance was found in the city center through the stadium (on foot). The approach is rocky (from a construction site), but children have plenty of freedom since there is a beach.

On the way to

Svir

We left and moved a little further - on the advice of local guys who helped us get out, we found a place at the edge of the island - we need to go along the dam and we come up against the division of the Svir. Very beautiful but not as equipped as previous sites. Fishing trip. But a gentle slope with sand. We see dry cargo ships and motor ships, but not going in front of us, but in a branching channel.

The fifth day began with an early rise, because it was cold to sleep in the tent. Because we did not place it facing the sunrise and the first rays of the sun did not warm it, and the dew, on the contrary, concentrated on our house. In an hour we woke up, cooked, ate, and got ready (usually we needed from 1.5). We moved towards the lighthouse in Storozhno. The turn to the lighthouse was from Pasha. Behind Pasha there are 25 km of road to Storozhno. 10 km have been paved (they were paved with us), and then there is a hole, then a ditch, but passable by any car. Just 15 km takes about an hour's drive. Storozhno is wonderful, quiet, no phone reception, beautiful views, boats, bridges, a temple (being restored) and a huge red and white lighthouse. We were not allowed into the lighthouse (we read online reports from guys who managed to negotiate with the keeper), they said that we could get permission at Petrokrepost. The lighthouse is 75 m high. An ideal place for photo sessions.

Still Careful

Well, then they flew to our region. It’s about 200 km to St. Petersburg, we managed to see Novaya Ladoga, Staraya Ladoga(and go into the fortress there) and Volkhov. It was an amazing trip. We could have added Kobona and Shlisselburg to it, but our animals were already bored and I remembered that we had turned off all the electricity in the house, including the refrigerator and freezer;))
